Be glad they were parking tickets. Here we have both photo radar and photo red light cameras. When they installed the red light cameras, the shortened the time the light stays yellow, so if you are going the speed limit, there is virtually no way you are going to stop in time, and if you floor it, they will get you for speeding. Either way, it's about a $300 fine. The cameras are privately owned, the city and the camera company split the "take". I'm one of very few around here that has never gotten a ticket from one of those things, but, being an enthusiast, I take both driving and riding very seriously. Jerry.

Hey Junkyard I noticed that you do not have a location on your posts where are you from, We had photo Radar here in Canada way back in the early ninties, but other than being a huge cash grab there were too many descrepancies and the courts were full of people fighting the tickets. I think the Ontario Government thought perhaps the money would be better spent hiring more police officers. And you are right if you take driving seriously you should not get any tickets at all, unless you forget to put money in the meter.

Sorry about that, I'm in Chandler, AZ, a suburb of Phoenix. In fact, I live about 3 miles south of the Phoenix city limits.

Lots of people here are fed up by being robbed by these things, a couple of years ago they passed a law that a photo ticket would not put points on your license, which causes your insurance to double, and I have 9 vehicles insured. This was a move by the government to lower public resistance to the cameras, but it didn't last long. There are now three separate propositions on the ballot for the next election, all of which would make traffic enforcement cameras illegal statewide. If only one of them pass, we lose the cameras.

It has long been known that they were simply a means of making extra money for the cities and the state. One of our local cities decided to put up photo radar cameras on a section of an urban freeway that went through their city limits, claiming it was for safety purposes. At first they made big $$$$, but soon everybody learned where the cameras were, slowed down for them, then speeded back up again. Revenue from the cameras dropped so low that the private company that owned them told that city that if they wanted to keep them, they would have to start paying for more of the cost out of their own pocket. The cameras were gone within a week.

Our state highway patrol uses portable photo radar on state higheways, using vans parked beside the road, but they are required to put up large warning signs a mile away, making them practically worthless at making money. Unfortunately, they did cause someone who was working on one of them to get killed, someone driving by shot him. This sparked more public outrage against the cameras. Just in my city, somebody went around with a high powered pellet gun and took out about 20 of them in one night. They are constantly being vandalized. All I can say, is hopefully they will soon be gone.

You are correct, we do need more cops, but cops are expensive. After all the training, their salary and benefits, a vehicle and equipment, uniforms, etc., you can get a whole lot of cameras for the cost of one cop. It is actually not cost effective to have real cops writing traffic tickets, it costs more than what the ticket is worth, so the cities actually lose money.

But, as they claim, it really is supposed to be about safety, rather than making money. Jerry.

I hear ya Jerry. One thing the tickets did, was make me mad. I still think I should have only one ticket for one parking spot. They guy was a jerk to which I alluded in my letter with the payment of the tickets.
