I rarely ever ride in formation. Mostly because I usually ride alone. There have been a lot of times while riding that I thought about doing something, and something kicked in and said, "don't do that, that's a dumb idea". So far, following my instincts has paid off. I have gotten caught in some bad situations, but I never intentionally do anything I'm uncomfortable with, unless it is to get out of something even worse. Jerry.

Most of the civilian group riders use the staggered diamond formation where every rider has the entire lane as Jerry described. The motorcycle police demonstrations where large groups ride side by side and execute complex maneuvers are truly impressive. In addition to not being THAT skilled, my nerves couldn't take the pressure of being absolutely perfect the entire time!
You were right to trust your gut.

I agree. I ride with my room-mate to school almost every morning and we always ride staggered. It is easier and a lot safer. (Also he has a 650cc bike so he is usually in front, lol)
Good judgement call on your part.

me and my dad ride side by side when we go on trips. but i have been riding with him for alot of years, so we are use to each others riding habits. if it was anybody else then i wouldnt do it. but, then again, i never ride with anybody else so i dont have to worry about it. if it was someone i didnt know, then i definately wouldnt.

I did forget to mention that I have practiced formation riding with our city's motorcycle police drill team (I have been a city employee for 32+ years, and there are some perks that go with that). I am also a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, and we ride in formation during funeral escorts, but this is all at very slow speeds. Jerry.

The only time that I have been side by side with another bike was at a red light.
We go to the same school and he saw that I had bought a bike, so we talked bikes till the green light.
But then he sped off and started weaving traffic on his 600cc sports bike.
I don't think I'll ever ride side by side with him. haha
