Question 82 Goldwing 1100 power?

So I went to look at a '82 Goldwing Inerstate 1100gl yesterday. It had some electrical issues (blinkers, headlight intermittent), sounded ok, 41,000 miles. It needed the usual tuneup and new paint.

When I rode it I thought it was under powered. I dont have any experience with the Goldwing but it seemed weak too me. No smoke or anything like that but just not the power I would expect a 1100 to have. I went 65mph but it seemed slow getting there.

Does anyone have any experience with these bikes? Should they haul? I know they are heavy but it still seemed slow.

The bike is at a good price and includes a trailer.

Here's some specs.........Never ridden one, but I know that GoldWingers traditionally LOVE those Goldwings. Rated at 83 HP, but am wondering about the gearing. Was headed the opposite way from 2 Goldwings as they were coming off the light in the other direction. It sure looked like one guy was trying to get on it, but it didn't seem to be all the quick. Might be that they're geared for cruising speed and riding two-up ? If it's a good price, it still might be worth considering and hopefully, someone who really knows those bikes will chime in.....

Had a 84 GL1100. It is so smooth you don't feel the power. It pulls like a freight train. No rush at any one rpm range, just a strong pull all the way up to red line. It may not feel quick but if I remember right it did the 1/4 mile in the low 14's high 13's. A great touring bike. I gave mine to my son-in-law because its too heavy for this old broken down person to handle. It now has over 70,000 miles on it and I got 38-40 mpg.

Thanks for the replies. The power on this was steady, no lags, steady all the way up to 65mph. Throttle response wasn't quick but was steady. It sounds like this is normal for this bike. I may look at a few others before I actually get one; I am sure other deals will show up.

The wings aren't real fast bikes. I have an 84 GL1200 and it will move fine for what it is. They are heavy and made for comfortable cruising. However what you will find is they can pull a house down. They have lots of low end power. Now the new GL1800s I hear are a different story, a sportbike dressed up like a tourer.

I will say once you get into a Goldwing it's kind of addicting. The bikes will go forever and comfortably too. We are looking to upgrade to an 1800 in the near future. It's the best two up riding bike out there.

Also since you said you were looking, there are a couple of things to consider. Up until 1987 the Goldwings used a stator for their charging system similar to the way the rebel charges. However when they go bad you are going to have to completely remove the engine from the bike to get to it because it's in the center of the block. No easy chore for certain. In 1988 when the 1500 was introduced they went with the alternator that is ridiculously easy to pull apart, clean and reassemble. More money for a 1500 though. If you have any Goldwing questions I'll be more than happy to tell you what I know.
