hey guys,
we have a question about the exuast on the 2002 reb 250.
we have the jacks" staggard duals and have decided to paint them matte black and cut off the baffles, we just cut them off right at the baffle and cranked it up very breifly. love the sound just a bit loud and worried about re-jetting issues,
the carb and air filter is stock to our knowledge, my hubby noticed a setscrew on the bottom of the carb today,(looks like a idle mixture adjustment)
is there any other adjustment to be done to it without buying new jets? if so what/where/how do we do it?

also will putting two 18" or so straight pipes in place of the baffles make it a bit quieter and help us not need a re-jet?

my hubby beleives this is so as we still have the stock restrictive air box and filter. so it should be that much leaner now should it?

thanks
here is a couple of pics of it as of now...(if i can get em posted)

Pics aren't showing here......Do you have the Clymer's for your Reb ? It'd show if there's any other adjustment screws to deal with or someone else here might know.....If you can wait until you get the extensions on, you might not wanna adjust anything just yet, but you also wouldn't wanna do any extended ridin' with it just it, either. (Maybe a couple short runs to see how the power band has been affected thru all 5 gears).

As mentioned in another thread, any pipe alterations on the post-'87 250's seem to want a re-jet even with the stock airbox still in place, but 18" extensions are fairly substantial so your OM may very well be right in that the extensions may help regain the needed back-pressure to balance things out....back-pressure being affected by length of pipes, true straights, straights with tapers, straights with shaping, straights with glass-packs on the inner diameter of the extensions or not, etc.

Once you've got the extensions on, you can make sure that the Reb is idling to spec rpm's & keep a close eye on the plug reads until you feel confident that everything's cool and/or to see if you need to consider a re-jet. A light tan plug read would be cool. Any whitish plug reads would be a major head's up to re-jet, white plug reads indicating a dangerously too lean condition.

Before I forget, if whatever you've cut off has also eliminated any exhaust pipe bracketing, you DEFINITELY want to re-bracket the ends of those pipes for much needed support........I hadn't done that initially & paid dearly with snapping exhaust flange studs at the exhaust ports of the head.

pics can be seen here:

the pipes are straight 1.5" OD approxx 18" long well be sleash cutting them about 45deg
no baffles as of yet,
will check plugs also, thanks for the info

Thanx for that link.........I like the way you left the curved portion of the aftermarket pipes on & made the cut rearwards of there. When I cut the stock mufflers off the 450 Rebel headers, the cut removed that slight upwards curve & the straight line extension of the EMGO's didn't have the needed "lift", so the EMGO's would scrape on heavy leans. You won't have that problem with your's. Well done & I'll bet the slash-cut 18"ers are gonna look GREAT! It'll be interesting to see if the added length of the extensions will help allow you to avoid a re-jet. Even without baffles, you just might be O.K. with this set-up. And I'll guess that the extensions will give the pipes a deeper, mellower tone. Please keep us posted, O.K. ?

Also dig what you're doing with that Savage. You obviously know what you're doing & having fun, as it should be.........Right on!

thanks gear, were working on getting the paint done now, but i did get the pipe for the pipes, and yea it was either cut it there or cut down low and have a real short slash cut under the bike, decided to cut litereally right at the chambers, theres still enough to weld to on them so i can sell them if anyone needs them,
wasnt too happy with them turning color so soon, and that they were so tight the baffles rubbed each other and dont look too new now, so i figured we would use all we could of that 200dolar piping, lol. got to cut the pipe in two, and make and some clamps but will have it done soon, and will post more pics too,

oh btw, anyone know why my hubby's account hasnt been activated? its been about 4 days, UN " amcline "

Ubetcha.........Please check to see if your OM's account works now. Just went in & checked it to "Active", hope that does it.......

Definitely hear ya about utilizing those pricey aftermarket pipes to your best advantage & again, you made the cut where it should work out just fine for ya

Checked out all the up-dated pics & really dig what you & Jodi have been doing! That's GREAT that you're Both involved in these projects!

Is the Reb still that shade of blue with flames or have you changed the color since ? I'm a flat-black kinda guy, but I'll always remember my Bro's Triumph chop back in the '70's, it was that shade of blue, just s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y a lighter shade, but looked righteous! To this day, when I see that color, it brings back GOOD memories.......

Ride Safe & keep up the good work!

Sounds sharp! Always a rush to watch any project come together, ain't it ?

So you're not concerned about the ol' superstition of "Green Bikes = Bad Luck" ? LMAO!........I'm not superstitious, either & even know a few Bros who purposely painted their sleds green to defy the odds, LMAO!

Nothing wrong with spray can paint jobs. Have seen some amazing results with spray bombing......professional look for around $30.....that's hard to argue with, no kidding.

2 most common stories I've heard trying to trace the origin of the "green bike" myth......

Some believe it had to do with the military couriers during World War II, riding olive green motorcycles, not arriving to their destination, etc.

The one I tend to believe as the origin was that the Triumph Racing Team years ago had all of their bikes painted either "Britiish Racing Green" or "Emerald Green" and tragically lost 5 team riders that season. According to the story, it spooked the Triumph factory so much that they discontinued using green on even their factory production bikes.............But you'll see green on the new Triumphs (different owner, new company essentially) so I guess they got by the superstition as well.....

Matt, that is one badass looking Rebel. I really like the back fender/ taillite look. Pipes look clean, too. Did a jetting issue arise? If it burbles at accelleration, runs a little weak at higher rpm's unless you choke it a titch, that would be a pretty good sign. Then, as G.J. said, keep a close eye on your spark plug color. a light tan color is preferred, a little darker is safer, white sucks.
Who took the pic of the two of you standing by the bike, the UPS man?

SWEET!!! Looks GREAT! Paint-job is primo, pipes look much better than the aftermarket ones did! Very well done!

How do they sound ? When running thru the gears, does the power band feel normal ?

Agreed with what b4v4 said.....those pipes look clean! Ya done good!

AWESOME JOB!!! I really like the paint and I can honestly say green is not my fav color (but it is hard to say that after looking at your Reb!!!)

Pipes are clean and perfect!

How much for you to mod mine
