Hi. I am a new rider and just purchased a 1986 Honda Rebel 250. The bike's appearance is acceptional and it runs really well, however it won't idle. Any suggestions on where to begin maintenance?

Welcome aboard, Mrs. Holmes  & CONGRATS on your "new" Rebel purchase. You've got one of what is known as the "Classic" Rebs...

If you don't already have one, the Clymer's Manual for your Reb would be highly recommended. The Honda OEM Service Manual can also be an invaluable tool to have.

You could check the tire pressures & visually inspect the tire tread & sidewalls for worn tread or sidewall cracks.

I always change all fluids on any new bike acquisition so's I know it's starting off with a fresh fluid change. Motor oil & fork oil in this case.

Battery can be checked for fluid level & adequate charge.

Final drive chain can be lubed & inspected as well as checked for proper tension.

Since it seems to be running well except for proper idle, the carb may need a good cleaning as the pilot jet (for idle) may be funked up. The manuals give good step by step instructions on all of these items.

Good luck & please don't hesitate to ask any questions at anytime.

Ride Safe......

Hi Mrs Holmes,
I pretty much have the exact same problem you do. I brought it to Bits and Pieces (the local moto shop) and had them do a check up on my newly purchased 86 Rebel 250. After performing the 8000 mile service they told me that I needed my carbs cleaned. That might fix your problem as well.

And if I might ask another question, does the clymer's manual have detailed instructions on carb cleaning? That would definitely be good since it will cost at least $80 for me to have it done at the shop. Thanks in advance! :D
