Can't remember if you have a 250 or 450! I know for the 450 if you change the filter, it is just over 2qt's. Not sure of the 250. The way to tell is add 1qt and then stand it up straight, insert the dipstick (do not screw it in) and see how much oil is on the dipstick. Repeat (only use about a 1/4 qt each time) until it is showing on the dipstick. Make sure the bike is upright each time you check the amount.

I use 20w-50 here in GA as our winters aren't really that cold.

Alright!!! An OIL thread!!!!

10w40, 15w50, 20w50, all Castrol GTX dinosaur oil, non-motorcycle specific. Cheapest local source is WalMart. I've used it for a LONG time, in thumpers, vertical twins, v-twins, transverse twins, inline 4s and V-fours. Changed every 3000 miles Never had a lubrication related engine failure.

...but its inexpensive and widely available, and there's no motorcycle pictured on the container, and your dealer likely doesn't sell it nor condone its use, so how good could it REALLY be?

I can't top that!

However, the 250's don't have a filter, and I do the 1.6 qt change about every thousand miles (with GTX 10-40).

I believe the 450's are like the 250's in that they do not have a oilf filter, but rather an oil screen, I am not 100% on this but we have several 450 owners here who could shed more light on the subject.

yup there is a filter on the 450 its on the bottom of the motor on the opposite side from the drain plug.. mine takes a 12mm socket to loosen and get too the filter..
