I have just purchased a 1987 Honda Rebel. This is my first bike. It has been sitting for three years not getting any real use. So I would like to do some general maintanace. I've ordered a battery got spark plug, oil, ect. However I have been told by a fellow bikier that there is an oil filter also, but at the shop I made my purchases at they do not know of one. Is there an oil filter in an '87 rebel or not ? I would like any help you can give me, before I have to just rip it apart to see.

Thanks

Its actually a oil screen, not a true "filter" some do not change them if it looks good. You can make the judgment call when you get it apart, or get one and replace it. A dealership may be the place to get the screen.

Welcome aboard, little2shaky......

'87 250 = oil screen
'87 450 = oil filter

Tho' it sounds like you may have the 250, right ?

Install a fuel filter. Add some Seafoam to the first few tanks of gas.

Welcome,
I'd highly recommend getting a Clymer's manual on your bike, or the equivalent. It was tremendously helpful in getting to know basics such as that. On my '86 250, you had to remove the right side crankcase cover to locate the cover to the oil screen. There were 3 philips head screws, and the heads were stripped out. I was unable to remove it and had to have a shop do it, then replace the screws. Good luck.

Just clean the screen, unless it is broken.
