I, too, am a new rider ... and am 51 to boot. Took the MSF the first part of May and finally passed in June. :D WHEW!! My husband found a beautiful, almost new, white '06 Rebel for me to learn on. In the past 2 weekends and today, I've put over a 1,000 miles on her!! Yup, my behind is sore, but I'm sure having fun! Have a question for y'all though. Just finished a 280-mile ride, part of which was on an interstate. How fast can the Rebel go for how long? We are taking a 4-day trip to Bend OR and back to WA via a long route (the Steens Mts) in a couple of weeks, and I don't know if I should ride with my husband on his VTX 1300 or take the Rebel. There will be a lot of highway travel at 60-70 mph. Your thoughts?

The Rebel can and will do 60 to 70 mph ALL day long, the only limets will be gas and your butt.

Welcome, WaitburgRose & CONGRATS! Over 1000 miles in short order.....you're definitely getting some quality saddle-time!
As far as your question, I'd say go for it! Contrary to popular belief (among those who simply haven't experienced it yet ), the 250 Rebel WILL run with the big dogs......all day long!
Ride Safe......

WOW!! Thanks for the encouragement. As we were swooping through these really wonderful curves today, I was wondering how I could sit on the back of a bike again as a passenger. If the weather looks like it will be good, I'll ride. If it looks like it will be crappy, I'll climb on with my husband (much more experienced rider) and just enjoy some snuggle time. :) Either way, we'll have fun. YAHOO!!

If you decide to ride your Rebel on the trip, you might want to consider a seat pad to make the trip more comfy. Check out this product:

It's a terrific pad, for short trips as well as long ones :)
Welcome WaitsburgRose! Now that I ride, I can't sit on the back of a bike... it drives me nuts
I'm 53 and just got my Rebel a few months ago and I'm thinkin this is a very good time in my life!
Go for it and enjoy your ride!

Patty, thanks for the Butt Buffer tip. That looks like a wonderful solution to my numb, sore hinny. :D
And MJ, thanks for the compliment, but I was anything but a natural!! This has been a labor of love ... and total stubborness. I was sure I was going to get kicked out of the MSF class for being a threat to humankind  but they had more faith in me than I did. And my husband was patient and encouraging as well. Now I'm having a blast!! 8)
