View Full Version : Weird Clutch Shifting

Hi all, strange problem...

So Monday I went down because of a taxi cab, it was a low low speed fall, didnt seem like much to it.

Upon which, I continued my journey to the motorcycle shop where I had a front brake rotor replaced with an old one from ebay, and also a new tire installed.

I watched the mechanic as he did that stuff, and at one point he checked the oil level, and added a slosh of oil into the engine block.

He also sprayed some spray lube on the case where the pivot is when you pull the clutch lever, and the wire eventually goes down to the engine area where there is a little arm that moves up and down.

Ever since that day, I have this weird shifting oddity where going from 2nd to first or from neutral to first.

about 2 out of 10 shifts I hearm and feel a "KA-CHUNK" when going down to first.

the other 8 times out of ten is the more normal sounding , more quiet sounding engagement sound.

Seems kind of hard, that KA CHUNK sound, almost like as if I tried to shift gears without pulling in the clutch lever.

But going from 1st to 2nd and higher there is no KA CHUNK. There is also no kachunk when going from 4 to 3 to 2 to neutral, just happens only when going to first gear.

So guys, is there anyway I can troubleshoot this problem ? Thanks all in advanced.

Is the idle the same as before? I have noticed that if the idle is up (choke on) it will clunk going to first.

Hey dan, ( my name is Danny ha ha ha ) Odd you said that, YES I do recall driving around with the choke on,

that is because the engine bogs on me, meaning that when I try to go, the engine sputters when releasing the clutch and no power is transmitted, but when the engine is fully hot, I dont need the choke.

I "discovered" driving with choke when cold just that other day, normally I would bog and bog and bog for 10 minutes till the engine gets hot.... very dangerous as I almost went down going around a corner due to engine bigging durning the turn.

I guess I will just do the 15 minute warmup tomorrow, ( YES it takes 15 minutes of idleing before the engine gets powerful enough to take off on first. )

I will try that tomorrow dan, thank you. Choke off, and I will see if that is still the case....

Sounds normal to me too. I get it sometimes when I shift into first at too high a speed. Slow down more before going into first (5mph).

Normal, no problem.

I tried to figure the same thing out on the wifes 01 rebel, and then when I bought my vlx it does it as well, the only thing I can figure is it has something to do with the gear box engaging the drive sproket/chain. I notice when I am sitting still in neutral and shift to first on the vlx that the drive sprocket and chain get a slight rouque from the gear. Just my $.02 on the problem, I dont worry about it anymore, have decided its normal as well.

Hey thanks all, I do feel better about it. I'll consider that normal and just be at peace with it.

If it breaks in the future, oh what the heck, its old, relatively inexpensive I'll just toss it into the river. or sell it for scrap parts.

My 450 does it!
My PC 800 does it!
My wifes 250 does it!

I think it's a Honda thing. At least I know when I'm going down to first if I haven't counted.

Hi, I took the bike for a ride today, making sure that I dont shift down to first until I am slow, and I had the choke off.

It didnt make that loud kachunk noise. I sure am glad this forum exists, and for all the cool people on it ! Thanks all !
