Hello, the gasket needs replacing, there are two bolt/studs at the head, I remove the bolts, then donut heavy metal thing, the thin circle thing, pull off the exhuast pipe, and what should I see in the head hole ? just a round gasket ? or do I need to access the gasket from the inside ? does that gasket need to be oiled ? thank you.

The gasket is #5 in the drawing, that is the gasket I am talking about. #4 is the thin circle thing.. #3 is the heavy donut thing...

Hay man NY here. What happened to surfmain site??? Anyway after taking off the exhaust, #5 is compressed inside the exhaust port of the engine. Take a flat head screw driver and gently pry them out. After you get new copper gaskets, take some grease or vasolen to them so that they are held in place as you install the exhaust.
Why do you want to remove them anyway???

Hey there, I dunno what happened, I'll miss that forum. A lot of good info is there, I hope they archived it...
anyway about that gasket ( didnt know it was copper, thought it was rubber ) ... One day I noticed wirrring sounds, then it progressed to a larger wirring sound, which then I hear rattling, and a bigger rattling.. and then I realized the cap nut was missing from there, and the other one was loose. I tightened both nuts and one stud broke, when then I got a new stud, tightened them both and the wirring sound is still there.
I hope it wirring sound is coming from that worn gasket, if not then I have no clue,
I'm gonna order a new gasket from the dealer, and change it out.
also the bike isnt as powerful as it used to be. I think that escaping exhaust wirring sound may have done something to the engine, hopefully after I get that gasket in, it would be all right.

even though those things are a little pricey, you should probably order two -- you may have trouble swinging it down far enough to change out a gasket if you only loosen one side (unless you separate the equalizer tube on the bottom between the two pipes, in which case, a, you may have to replace the asbestos gasket down there and, b, depending on age, that connect can be difficult to loosen.
I have 2 new honda oem gaskets here if you cant get any $6.00 would include shipping. I'll locate them just in case you decided you need them.

Thanks I just got back from ordering gaskets at the place, About the taking off both at the same time,
is that easier ? should I really remove both at the same time and not loosen the equalizer tube nut ?
Please give me more details as how that is done, I do have a friend handy that can hold one side while I do the other ?
I apprecuate all your help, thank you.

Thats awesome fab, I could use any and all help I can get, DAM this 85 rebel of mine, more wrenching than riding. Especially I live in the middle of manhattan where I dont have a garage to do things, I have to do everything on the side of the street.
Maybe you can help me lift it over the fence at the hudson river, upon which after the damn thing sinks to davy jones locker, I'll call up geico and get my 1000 bucks back.
This bike sucks more money and time than anyone else's wife upon a divorce,
I am about having it up there here... ( puts hand above eyebrow )
I am so ticked off that I have half a mind to go the the dealership and get a brand new 2006 Shadow VLX 600 on finance. ( I dont have much money ).
and now the brakes are giving me trouble, which I got new brake pads at 35 bucks a pair at the dealer's ( I been ripped again )
things wouldnt be so bad if it werent for the long wait for little parts to come in from honda.. those gaskets wont be in till at least friday.
All this is worrying me to death, am I doing damage to the engine by having that leaky gasket ? I noticed the bike isnt as powerful as it was before, or is that my imagination as I am getting used to the acceleration of the 250 ?
This bike is playing with my mind, it may be cursed.. I dunno...

well, I changed it out, in between thunderstorms. I hope it works ok now... dont know till I ride it next time.
You will likely have to tighten the nuts a quarter/half turn or so after each ride the first few times out as the washers seat theselves. Just check htem to make sure they arent getting loose.
