Got a question for everyone.
I want to make my 450 louder without changing pipes. Is there any way to keep the stock pipes (I like the look of the pipes, one on each side) and make them louder AND without having to re-jet the carb? Would gutting them make a difference in sound? Had a friend who gutted his yamaha (years ago) and there wasn't much difference. Not enough for the hassle he went through to do it.
Am I living in a fantasy world or is this a do-able mod?

Check out the denis kirk magazine or web site for metric bikes they did have replacement exactly like the stock ones. You might just find what you need there.

That'd be great if Dennis Kirk offers stock pipes w/o the baffles & definitely worth checking out.
What cc was your friend's Yamaha ? Reason I ask is that on the 450 Rebel, if the stock pipes were gutted, they'd probably sound fine.
From experience, I can save you time in saying to not bother drilling any holes in the endplate. I tried it & wasn't worth the effort. Ended up cutting the stock pipes at the header/muffler weld & THAT dang sure did the trick! LMAO! Put some 12" EMGO Shorties on for a little backpressure recovery & I'm perfectly content with the sound & performance. But I'm aware that you want to keep the stock pipes & I respect that. If you've got the patience to try to kick out the baffles, you might attain the sound you're looking for. One hassle would be that center pipe & I didn't want to fight it anymore than I already had & just broke out the sawzall, LMAO!
If you keep the stock airbox & just open up the pipes however you decide to do it, no re-jetting is necessary. It breathes easier, runs & sounds better!

How about cutting off the stock mufflers and go for some slip-on's ? ...that way you keep the stock look (one pipe on each side)

Hey Are!! How's the project going?! When are you going to be able to register it?
I had thought about that also. I will look to see if I can find some slip on's that closely match the original shape. Not in a hurry to do it, just fielding ideas for later. I want to have someone look at it and think "nice bike (stock pipes)" and then when I fire her up "whoa - great sound (out of stock pipes?)" ROTFLMAO!!! Kinda like Jekyll and Hyde!!! 8)

Hi.
The project's going great :) The bike is back to stock now.It wont be long to registering...I got an apointment at the dnv the
5. may. Hopefully it goes thru without any marks..(wont get the plates unless its perfect) Cant have any marks, its got something to do with first-time regristration i think.
Still don't have my license though  So there's plenty of time to "build it back" to modyfied version :P

I'm wondering if that's what Boggs meant by the Dennis Kirk option ? Slip-ons that resemble the stock mufflers ?
Edit: www.jcwhitney.com might also have something similar.
And good luck with the registration, Are! You're doing what many do here for getting straight pipes thru inspection. They'll put on baffled slip-ons, pass the inspection & then swap 'em back out again later

Last time i looked in the denis kirk mag, now its been a while, they had slip ons, stock replacements, and the replacements to change them to staggered. I haven't looked since last year though, just thought it might be worth a look.
