View Full Version : 450 Rebel Final Drive Chain

Always keep a maintainence log whenever I do work on the bikes. Noticed that the last chain adjustment was in Jan. & it's in need again. Two thoughts come to mind, the chain is already stretched & in need of replacement and/or by lowering the rear-end, it may have brought the countersprocket & final drive sprocket closer together. If the sprockets indeed have been brought closer, I may remove the unneeded links on the new chain & write down the # of links I'd be starting with on a new chain for future reference.

For the time being, will re-adjust this one again, but will start looking around to see if we can find a Part # to be used for buying a discounted final drive chain from our friendly local parts guy, similar to the air filter element & oil filter.

Does anyone know off-hand how many links are in the 450 Rebel drive chain ? It's nothing urgent, I can count the rollers for the # of links or count the sideplates & multiply x 2 when I adjust this one.

Both the Clymer's & Honda Service Manual recommend the same chains, either DID (friggin' expensive) or the RK, but neither manual mentions how many links! DOH!

Once the link-count is known, will be able to comparison shop for the economy 525 brand.

Thanx, Snorey! At first glance, I'd thought...."hmmm, maybe, maybe not" because they still weren't providing the # of links, but then realized it's 25 FEET worth of chain, which could be cut to needed length & just buy a new master link (not sure if a m/l is provided in the auction).

At the starting bid + $10 postage, it IS a good bargain! I'm used to paying approx. $35 per measured chain per bike. Will have to measure one link, see how many single chains could be made from this & keep an eye on it.

Thanx again & happy bidding if we both end up bidding on it, ROTFLMAO!

Don't worry -- I don't need a chain right now. I only have 5800 miles on my chain, just tightened it up for the first time and I have plenty of miles left on it. Just gonna clean and lube it good when I get it back. Counting down the days!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!

Thanx again, Snorey, but if you want to score it & stash it, by all means go for it. :D Been so busy here, not sure if I'll be able to keep track of the auction or not & it'd really be a matter of whether or not the closing bid made it cost effective.

The rear axle torque spec is 58-72 ft. lbs. (seems like quite a variance, eh ?) so I've been torquing it at @65 ft. lbs. Will have to check but I don't believe the adjusters are in the red zone, so maybe I just need to torque that baby down a bit more. On the chopped Trumpet, I just tighten down the axle nuts to "damn tight" using the "forearm gauge", LMAO!

That is exactly the spec that I torqued it at --- figured it was in the "middle" and that is a good place to be!! (Great Minds Think Alike ROTFLMAO!!)

That's the OLD SCHOOL way!! Them new fangled gadgets are so dang confusin' to use. ROTFLMAO!!
