The Clymer's is notorious for providing some false info. Comparing the Clymer's with the Honda Service Manual, discovered just one of these mistakes.

The Clymer's says to change the motor oil every 600 miles. HUH ? LOL! Well, it's change the oil after the FIRST 600 miles & then every 4000 miles thereafter, with oil filter change recommended with every other oil change.

Some would no doubt change their oil at say, every 3000 miles or even sooner, as frequent oil changes go a l-o-n-g way in keeping that motor ticking & happy!

I'm no every 600 miles man, but around 2000 I change them, with 88 model vlx I hope to keep it running a long time, so every 2k is good for it. even if it does mean once a month during the season

Absolutely, cTc...in total agreement.

I don't mind paying for fresh oil knowing that it extends the life of the motor. On the Trumpet (36 yrs. old), I've even changed it out after the rebuild after every 6-7 runs (no speedo, so no odometer) but the point being wanting to keep the oil clean. Way I look at it, it serves the chop well & if the oil is only slightly used & still has some usable mileage, will toss it in the old pick-up truck
