I've ridden bikes for almost 40 years but my wife's is Rebel is new to me. It only starts when the shifter is in the neutral position. It does not start when the bike is gear with the clutch engaged. Is this normal? I have never encountered a bike that couldn't be started in any gear as long as the clutch was in.

If the kickstand is down the bike will not start in gear, if the kickstand is up, the clutch has to be engaged to start the bike. Its safety features that have been used for last 15 or so years. Unlike harley davidson that will start in gear, I have seen several people dump their bikes because of that. I like the starter disable features like that, it help new riders and women gain more confidence since its one less thing to have to worry about.
