Problems with 1st Gear on my 86' Rebel 450

I recently bought an 86 Honda Rebel 450 and have noticed that I am having trouble putting the bike in 1 st gear. It seems that the gear shift gets stuck and I have to tap it up a bit then down. It might be the original (not sure)
For someone not that experienced with bikes can anyone tell me what I need to do. How expensive if I need a new clutch/gear shift? Thanks for any help.

Have you changed the oil? Seem on the 250's some people have had trouble finding neutral, and an oil change helped, not sure thats the answer to your problem, as I have not had any luck finding a 450 to add to my collection. But there are few 450 riders here that may be able to help.
