Hi. I'm Sid. I own a 2005 Rebel. Recently a mechanic at the honda dealer lead me wrong. I ride every day. My bike is my only transportation, he's not so pretty because of it. It's been raining lately and he had a lot of grime built up on the engine surface. I took him in for an oil change and the guy looked at it and insisted I had an oil leak. He wanted to charge me $500+ to fix it. He said the only way to know for sure was to degrease the engine and find the leak, which he was going to charge me no less then $200 to do. I am not an idiot. I can degrease an engine, don't let my gender fool you ;)
So I asked if I did the oil change myself what and how much oil he'd recommend, (i didn't have the manual at the time, I do now). He said synthetic 10w-40, 2qts.
I cleaned the engine up and put the oil in, yep too much, I shouldn't rush these things. No leak. It's been a week and no leak. Sadly, the abundance of oil has washed its way into the air box. I have a new air filter on the way. My issue is that Saturday he drove fine in the morning, then a few hours later I started him up and he was fine idling. I started moving in 1st and he was still fine. I went to pull out into traffic and speed up, as soon as I hit 15mph he sputtered and lost power, the engine was still running but idling low. I tried again after letting him run for a bit and again at 15mph he sputtered and lost power. Sometimes the engine would cut out completely but for the most part it just lost power.
I've researched and researched. This is what I have done:
Drained the oil in prep for oil change
pulled the air filter (new one should arrive soon)
Checked fuel screen and discovered I don't have one. I found this advice in an article that described similar symptoms on the same bike but an earlier model, i thin an '03.
Checked fuel flow through the petcock.

Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas?

Thanks all.
