Hey- I just got a 2001 Rebel 250 from my brother in Louisiana.I'm bring it to Texas, but he's running straight pipes on it. I need a set of inexpensive mufflers to keep Johnny Law off my back. I found some at JC Whitney for around $100.00 . Anybody got any feedback about mufflers from JC Whitney?? Any advice would help alot!

Remember, keep the rubber side down!! Boneside

Welcome aboard, Boneside.....

Not sure of the MVD laws in TX, but in AZ, any vehicles coming in from out-of-state require a Motor Vehicle Inspection.

You'll find that the mufflers offerred by JC Whitney are the exact same items offerred by other aftermarket outlets, but JC Whitney can usually sell 'em cheaper as they buy large quantities from the wholesalers. Bottom line, the quality should be fine.

Please keep in mind that the Rebel straight pipes/headers are 1 3/8" O.D., so you can use mufflers that are set up for mounting on 1 1/2" O.D. pipes by using 1/8" reducers (JC Whitney calls these reducers "collars"). Also, if baffles are required by TX, you can get "internal baffles" from JC Whitney to slip inside some of the straight open style mufflers.Or if you choose mufflers that are already baffled, you might only have to deal with the reducers/collars for mounting.

thanks a lot, dude!! I'll do some research about the baffles. Judgeing from some of the Harley's i've pulled up next that make my teeth rattle, I don't think they are reqiured. Thanks again for the advice!!

Ubetcha......If straight pipes are allowed, then your options obviously increase.

Important note to keep in mind: If your Reb now has open headers, PLEASE make sure that the previous owner added brackets to keep the pipes from vibrating. I'd cut the pipes on the 250 & a "friend" told me that I shouldn't need to add any brackets due to the cross-over pipe. Shame on me for listening to him against my better judgement. The vibration & the weight of the pipes without brackets started snapping exhaust flange studs at the head/exhaust ports & it turned into a friggin' nightmare! Those studs are only 6mm & WEAK. Over the course of time, I lost 3 of the 4. Helicoiled 2 successfully, but one was gonna require a machine shop to fix. Ended up selling the 250 & scoring the 450, but that was one experience in frustration that I'll never forget.....Bike ran like a top, had done some considerable mods, but couldn't ride it without worrying about the dang studs snapping......Another thing to remember on this subject is to not tighten the exhaust flange stud nuts too tight. Finger tight & then a little snug-up beyond that is about it (just insure that there's no movement if you try to jiggle the pipes by hand), otherwise the heat expansion rate can wreak havoc on those chintzey studs as well.......
