Curious.. how does one blow a piston on a Rebel?

Respectfully not wanting to interfere with any possible sale possibilities, but in answer to your question.......If a bike is running extremely lean, it can cause excessive heat build-up in the combustion chamber, detonation (extreme pinging) & if pushed long & hard enough, it can cause what's called a "holed piston", literally meaning that a hole is burnt/blown thru the top of the piston (piston crown). This might be the most common cause, but others are possible.......lack of adequate oil feed.....again, heat build-up.....or piston rings that either crack or come un-seated, which can cause a "stuck piston", with the piston jammed in the cylinder bore, which would also be scored from the piston having too much movement before it goes south.

Wow.. I had no idea. That is the first Rebel I have ever heard of with a blown piston. Really enforces the ideas of proper maintenance with your equipment. Good info, GJ!

These basic failings can apply to just about any bike or internal combustion engine.......and again, I have no idea what the actual cause was/is in K-Swift's case.
Yes, it is a head's up for practicing regular routine maintainence.....regular plug reads can be very helpful in giving the owner a general overview of what's going on inside the motor.
With these newer bikes already being set "factory lean", which does enhance performance, it also puts them closer to the danger zone. If mods are done, or even an air leak which can cause a too lean condition, it wouldn't take much to push the balance over the edge. This is why you'll see it repeated time & again to ensure that one's bike is not running TOO lean (white spots/deposits on the spark plugs are a definite warning sign of this). Get 'em too lean & the top-end can toast in relatively pretty short order. I've scored spare parts over the years and it's not been uncommon to find a bucket of holed pistons included in the lot. Old, worn-out pistons can be inverted & make cool ash trays or holders for small spare parts, but holed pistons are more destined for the metal recycle, LMAO!
Which reminds me..........you can take an old distributor cap off of a car or truck & with the plug wires removed, the empty wire towers on the cap make excellent pen holders for the workbench......hehehe.......

Hmmm.. now I will know what to do with all my loose pens! :p

Or, just not changing/watching the oil at all will do it pretty well...

Oh yes, that'll do it as well......."lack of adequate oil feed".....moving metal parts, different expansion rates, little or no oil to reduce excessive heat build-up or to lubricate parts.....a piston (among other parts sometimes) can "seize" or get "stuck", stopping the show.
Sorry to hear about that, K-Swift.....and I'm guessing that the dealership wouldn't be very helpful in that case. If you don't mind me asking, how many miles were on the bike before this happened ? Reason I ask is because this is an '06 & I'm wondering if the low oil was on you or the dealer......Dealer prep has been known to be lacking in some instances. If they hadn't topped off the oil during the prep, it wouldn't take long for this type of thing to happen.....
