Hi,
I'm wondering where is the cheapest place to get replacement front pads, a rotor, and rear brake shoes for my 85 250 rebel.
I saw somewhere a new front rotor retailed for $200 new, and I find that hard to swallow considering I only paid $600 for the bike. Is that how much a brake rotors cost for motorcycles??? I know I can get brake rotors for my cars for like $20-$30 and they use a lot more metal than ones for motorcycles...

Dang.....just checked www.bikebandit.com and they want $258 for the rotor (they gotta be kiddin'!!!!).....and they don't even stock rear brake shoes. Huh ? No rear brake shoes ???
You might try www.jcwhitney.com and see what they've got.....and if all else fails, I'd try a local indie shop & see if they can find something more economically sane.

Just found this on eBay, but it's for '96-06.....Good price for BOTH rotor & pads. You might contact this seller & see if he can get you the same deal for your '85.

Thanks for the tips.. I looked on JC Whitney and there was nothing under "Rebel", but CMX250 gave results for $28.99 brake pads (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-VehicleBrowse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2010766/p-2010766/N-111+1985+200730436+600014438/c-10111) and $22.99 rear shoes (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-VehicleBrowse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2010765/p-2010765/N-111+1985+200730436+600014438/c-10111)
The rotors (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-VehicleBrowse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2016169/p-2016169/N-111+1985+200730436+600014438/c-10111)more expensive at $170, but I guess that is still better than $258!!
I Contacted the ebay guy, we'll see what he has to say.

Ubetcha.........Wouldn't be a bad idea to do the math & comparison shop.
BikeBandit has the pads for cheaper than JC Whitney, but you've gotta watch those shipping fees no matter where you shop as sometimes S&H bumps up the overall price back to unreasonable........$22.95 for rear brake shoes is not a bad price, but again, you've gotta figure in the shipping costs.
You could calculate these items with the cost of shipping included, then also check with a local indie shop as well as the dealership, then go with the most economical for each item.
I'm surprised that the rotor/pads offerred on eBay for '96-'06 are apparently different from the earlier years. Does anyone know if these parts would be interchangeable for all 250 Rebel years ?
Any chance of getting that rotor turned at a machine shop? I have never replaced a rotor on a motorcycle in my lifetime, just replaced pads and kept going. Even if it's grooved, the pads will wear into it and work fine in short order. But even if it's heavily grooved, a machine shop should be able to stick it on their lathe.

Good point.....was wondering about that myself. Not sure what the wear limits for the rotor are, but it sure seems like it could be turned at a machine shop & save even more moolah......Dang.....on the 250 runner & then the 250 parts bike, I GAVE away both of those rotors! DOH! I'd have sold ya one o' those for $10. Dang!
