Was so impressed with "Are's" taillight mod (as seen in the Cool Mods section) that I decided to do something similar to this 450, using a vintage cat's eye taillight that I'd refurbished.

The 450 has 3 seperate wiring harnesses that disconnect from under the rider's seat & head towards the back of the bike. One harness is for the license plate light, one for the rear turn signals & one for the taillight.

Removed the license plate & turn signal harnesses completely as I wouldn't be using them anymore.

The taillight on the 450 Rebel has not one, but two 1157 bulbs inside of it. (On a side note, even tho' the taillight lenses on the 250's & 450's look exactly the same, they're not interchangeable as the mounting screw holes don't line up). The harness for the taillight is crimped right where it enters the taillight & there's 3 wires....2 feed wires that split into 4 to feed both bulbs & the 3rd wire is the ground.

Green/Yellow = Feed
Brown = Feed
Dark Green = Ground

I cut the wiring (all 3) directly in front of where the 2 feed wires split to become 4 wires since only 2 feed wires would be needed for the cat's eye taillight. Then I cut 1 ft. extensions for the 3 wires & used bullit connectors. The 1 ft. extensions were j-u-s-t the right length, tho' another 3" wouldn't have hurt.

Having removed the stock license plate light housing, that left the stock bracket that's tack welded beneath the tail-end of the fender. This bracket was used to mount the backplate & cat's eye taillight. Used cardboard as "Are" recommended to make the template for the backplate. Couldn't find aluminum sheet, so bought some galvanized instead & used that, making sure to spray paint it to avoid future rusting. Please refer to "Are's" mod to see the desired shaping.

Mounted the backplate, cut a piece of old inner tube to shape & placed that between the cat's eye & backplate for a bit of rubber mounting quality. In addition to the 2 mounting bolts on the cat's eye, I drilled 2 more holes to the left & right of those to use 2 more bolts for reinforcement in mounting the backplate. On one of these additional mounting bolts, I attached the Dark Green ground wire. The 2 feed wires were attached to the 2 wires from the cat's eye. It doesn't matter which feed wire goes to which taillight wire, they'll work either way...for the taillight or for the brake light or both.

Once done, the one harness runs along the top of the rear fender, then goes down thru the hole in the fender where the 2 harnesses for the license plate & turn signal wiring had used to go & then extends to the rear of the fender tip where the mod was installed.

Hi GearJammer.

I have posted some pics in the cool mod's section because my freewebs site is frozen.........

I have to admit that I had some problems with the wiring doing this mod.....I think i blew up 3-4 fuses LOL.......I am used to the green/yellow beeing ground so i had stuck that on to the bolt coming out of the taillight. The light worked fine but when I pushed the brake pedal the light died.......I tried all possible combinations but it still did not work (there are 2 green and 2 brown wires coming back into the fender, two are for the licence plate light and two are for the taillight) because of that I got confused and frustrated :o And i was wery close to saying fu*k this! And give up, but then i remember seeing a wire diagram on this site and the day was saved :D

Are, That was very thoughtful of you to post your taillight mod pics in the Cool Mod section & I'm sure many will appreciate that. You know, the more I think about it, your design makes more sense than Honda's & looks pretty trick as well! :wink: With the stock set-up, Honda seperated the taillight & the license plate light, which only requires more wiring, which only makes more things that could possibly go wrong. (I guess their design was based more on wanting it to look like another "brand" of bike :shock: )

With your design, the taillight has a clear lense on the bottom of the taillight to illuminate the license plate at the same time, so it serves a dual purpose & eliminates some unneeded wiring.

Don't feel bad, I toasted the taillight fuse during assembly as well, LOL! I inadvertantly touched the brown wire to the frame with the key "On", saw a small spark & later found & replaced the toasted taillight fuse.

The wiring on the 250/450 might be slightly different, will try to check out the schematic for the 250 in the FAQ section for comparison, but you're right...the feed wires, brown & green/yellow (on the 450) also split to feed both stock taillight & license plate light. The original splitting of these wires on the 450 occurs before the connectors under the rider's seat & then continue as 3 seperate harnesses, but essentially I believe they originate from the same power sources. And the split to feed both taillight bulbs is done directly at the taillight. Dark green on the 450 seems to be pretty much the coded color for "ground" throughout the bike.

Just checked the schematic & can see that on the 250, there's one feed & one ground each for the turn signals & the license plate light.

Turn signals: Light blue = Feed
Dark green = Ground

Orange = Feed
Dark green = Ground

License plate light: Brown = Feed
Dark green = Ground

For the taillight, they required two feeds & one ground:
Brown = Feed (for either taillight or brake light)
Green/Yellow = Feed (for either taillight or brake light)
Dark green = Ground

Essentially the same wiring arrangement as on the 450.
