View Full Version : Serious oil leakage problem

My rebel has been slowly dripping oil since I bought her in May. I barely affected my oil level, worst thing was that it was getting on my chain and that was spinning it everywhere. But the other day I took off for a ride, and I heard an odd 'ping' noise. Sounded like something under tension had just snapped. I stopped and looked everything over (especially my spoked cuz I thought it was that) but saw nothing out of the ordinary.) I said to myself 'it does it again I'm turning around' but it didn't. So on a rode. She rode just fine, no problems. But 15 miles down the road I was at a light and I look down to see oil spewing from below (still running fine). I pulled over, turned her off and called for a pick up. The oil continued to steadily drip out until all was drained out. Its coming from somewhere up over the sprocket. Before I tear her apart, anyone have any suggests what I might be looking for? Could it be just a seal or am I in for major work? Thanks

What year and how many miles? that's a big help. Yes, there's a seal there, but mostly it's dry right behind that side.

My 450 Reb has a very light seepage in that area & isn't a problem so far. If you check out the thread below, you'll see b4v4's advice on how to replace the bad seal that's behind the countershaft sprocket. Normally, it would require splitting the cases, but b4v4's bud figured out a way around that to make it easier if you decide to give it a shot......250/450 design being similar, I'd assume the fix mentioned would be the same in either case.....

Taken from www.bikebandit.com.....here's a diagram of the tranny....the seal being Part #20

Here's a diagram of the gearshift mechanism with an oil seal, Part # 17.....please note the springs in the diagram. Does your shifter still work O.K. ? BTW, these were randomly taken from a 2002 Rebel 250 list of diagrams....

must of had a blockage in you vent pcv tube, thats why i added a brass T-fitting on mine( the vent tube hose is the 1/2inch hose coming from the middle top of crankcase on the 250) with a chrome air breather as a backup, blowby gas pressure in the crankcase caused the seal to blow,if thats what it is

Good point, mustangcar & your mod sounds pretty trick. When I had the 250, just removed the charcoal cannister/seperator & left the stock vent hose open & as is for more breathing. I'd guess overfilling the motor oil could also create excess pressure that could blow that seal out, too......
